Essential vocabulary for integrating in Luxembourg: how to pass the Sproochentest

Moving to a new country is not just about changing your address or job. Above all, integration depends on language—more specifically, on the ability to understand and use everyday vocabulary.

In Luxembourg, a truly multilingual country, mastering key vocabulary is a powerful tool for social, professional, and administrative integration.

At Prolingua, we support learners every year in this process, whether their goal is better integration or preparing for the Sproochentest—an essential step toward obtaining Luxembourgish nationality.

Why vocabulary is the key to integration

Even before tackling complex grammar or linguistic subtleties, vocabulary enables you to:

  • Understand everyday situations
  • Build connections with locals
  • Gain confidence when speaking
  • Feel comfortable in professional and social interactions

In Luxembourg, knowing essential Luxembourgish words—and understanding when to use them—greatly facilitates adaptation. This ability is also directly assessed during the Sproochentest, which focuses on comprehension and expression in real-life situations.

Everyday vocabulary: the foundation for a strong start

The first words we learn often make the biggest difference in human interactions. In Luxembourgish, greetings such as Moien, Äddi, Wéi geet et?, and Merci / Villmools merci are essential for establishing natural first contact.

Being able to introduce yourself allows you to go further in conversations, whether with a neighbour, colleague, or administrative officer.

Preparation for the Sproochentest often includes dialogues based on real-life situations, making this type of vocabulary particularly important.

Understanding culture through language

Language is also a carrier of culture. Certain Luxembourgish words and expressions directly reflect local habits and values:

  • Feierowend (end of the working day)
  • Schueberfouer
  • Gromperekichelcher

Learning this vocabulary not only helps you better understand your environment, but also makes you more comfortable in informal interactions—an often underestimated yet essential aspect of succeeding in the Sproochentest.

Structure and assessment of the Sproochentest

The Sproochentest consists of two mandatory components based on the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), assessing speaking and listening skills.

Speaking – expected level A2

The speaking test corresponds to level A2. It evaluates the ability to express oneself clearly and simply on everyday topics (family, work, leisure, etc.). It includes:

  • An interview with an examiner on a chosen topic
  • aA description of a visual prompt

Assessment is based on clarity, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to interact.

Listening – expected level B1

The listening test corresponds to level B1. This part assesses the ability to understand everyday situations through three audio recordings:

  • A radio message
  • A conversation
  • A presentation

A multiple-choice questionnaire is completed during the listening test on a tablet.

Duration and passing criteria

Both tests take place within half a day (approximately 35 minutes in total).
To pass, candidates must obtain at least 50% of the total points. A lower score in speaking can be compensated by the listening score, provided that the overall average reaches at least 50%.

Key vocabulary to pass the Sproochentest

The Sproochentest does not aim for linguistic perfection, but rather the ability to communicate effectively in real-life situations. The expected vocabulary mainly revolves around:

  • Daily life
  • Leisure activities
  • Work
  • Family
  • Everyday procedures

It is therefore crucial to learn words and expressions that can be directly used in speaking. At Prolingua, our courses focus on useful, contextualized, and reusable vocabulary, perfectly aligned with the requirements of the Sproochentest.
